1. Trend setting: From eIntegration to Value Creation |
Integration is the key word of two prominent conferences in the virtual enterprise community this summer.
- BLED 2005 Conference in Bled, Slovenia and
- ICE 2005 Conference in Munich Germany show healthy development in participant numbers and several new formats and services.
While ICE 2005 did focus on the “Integration of products, services and organizations” for the design of integrated customer solutions, Bled 2005 brought together a view on “eIntegration in action” in several industries as research and education, business, and trade. The Ami@Work action day on the ICE conference demonstrated the integration of collaboration technologies around ten application domains. The consistent message that emerges from the two conferences is that the abundance of modular information technology as well as the methodologies for integration have reached the necessary level of maturity for rapid take-up in the near future.
Both conferences as well convene that Value Creation will become a key issue on the research agenda for the virtual enterprise community. The Bled conference calls for papers on eValue for next year. The vast range of technical and organizational possibilities calls for direction: what is wanted? What is waste and what does create value? Such questions are relevant for practitioners, who need to validate their business cases, direct product and service development, or simply account for knowledge work. These questions raise fundamental academic issues at the same time. For example, what is productivity of knowledge workers or collaborating professionals and how can these be measured? We look forward to insights at next summer’s conferences.

3. ICE 2005 conference – Integration of products, services and organizations |
“Integrated Engineering of Products, Services and Organisations” is the focus of the 2005 edition of the ICE conference, which was held at CeTIM - University Bw Munich from June 20th to June 22nd. Bavaria’s Staatsminister Erwin Huber opened the conference and received its participants in the residence of the Bavarian Kings.
http://www.ice-onference.org/2005 The ICE Conference is rapidly developing as the European technology and engineering management forum which brings together researchers (60%) and practitioners (40%) for highly interactive sessions on developments in the domain of collaborative and concurrent engineering, and virtual organizations. ICE 2005 has reached its highest attendance level in eleven years, with a total of 250 registrations throughout the 3 days, who come from 26 countries in the EU, Switzerland, Russia, Turkey, China, Japan, and USA.
Building on past achievements, ICE successfully launched a number of targeted improvements this year:
Academic rigor has been strengthened by this year’s introduction of full paper double blind peer review for the forty-eight academic papers presented in the scientific paper sessions on the first day. The ICE Online Proceedings repository was launched on VE-Forum with open access to all scientific papers since ICE 2001. This knowledge repository is structured in the chapters:
- Engineering Management
- Collaborative Engineering
- Product Development
- Virtual Enterprise
All chapters call papers for the ICE 2006 Conference in Italy.
A further step is this year’s launch of a corporate partner program which is supported by AREL, Bosch, EADS, and Siemens to complement strong backing from the academic community with practical relevance. Rolf Buetje, Vice- President, head of EADS’ corporate research centre and Armin Hoffacker, manager at BOSCH’s corporate sector research and advanced engineering emphasized the industrial relevance of innovation methods and the contribution of the ICE community in their development. ICE 2005 followed its successful formula of highly interactive workshops on day 2 aiming at exchanging experiences and brainstorming on new work, which often leads to new initiatives, projects and publications. This years sessions profited from good weather in the conference Biergarten in:
- W1 Virtual Enterprises in Aeronautics
- W2 Legal issues in the IST and Collaborative Environment
- W3 Distributed technology infrastructures for CE
- W4 Ambient or mobile collaborative working environment
- W5 Collaborative business network
The annually changing Day 3 of ICE was this year dedicated to the AMI@work Forum Day: Towards ambient intelligence at work, vision 2010. This forum day has given the opportunity to the different AMI@work communities to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in the application of new, ambient intelligent technologies. This has been an outstanding occasion to debate and contribute to the shaping of the vision and roadmap of the communities, in particular by raising the prominent future of Living Labs, in direct relationship with the i2010 initiative, which presents a “European Network of Living Labs” in its priority List of Actions.
