1. www.eJOV.org - New Issue on Learning in Networked Organizations

Dear VE-Forum User,

We are delighted to announce the Special Issue on Learning in Networked Organizations (Vol. 7) edited by Robert M. Verburg, Janine Swaak and Bernhard Katzy. This issue marks the relaunch of an electronic journal, which was founded in 1998 at the University of Bern by Joachim Griese and Pascal Sieber.

Volume 7 addresses learning in different settings of networked organizations, such as multi-project environments or cross-border collaborations. In particular it explores key issues in relation to learning strategies, practices, and critical factors in complex networked organizations. Three papers report on recent scholarly studies in the area of learning and knowledge sharing in today’s organizations: A case study about a group of New Zealand State sector organizations is used by Pak Yoong and Jocelyn Cranefield to introduce a model for inter-organizational knowledge transfer. Saija Maeki-Komsi, Päumlivi Pöumlyry, and Eero Roporeflect on “Learning and Knowledge Building in Distributed Work Environments”, Marleen Huysman and Yuwei Lin conducted an ethnographic case study on learning in a GNU/Linux User Group.

Two further papers reflect practically oriented contributions to the executive branch, eJOV Executive. Henk de Poot, Ingrid Mulder, Björn Kijl discuss to what extent knowledge workers cope with their everyday job. Elizabeth Lank explores the different aspects of learning in a cross-organizational collaborative setting.

The special issue also includes summaries of recently defended PhD projects and shows the importance of managing e-learning development, knowledge sharing between professionals in co-opetitive networks, and the dynamics of open source communities.

eJOV has been designed as a platform for publishing theoretical and empirical research related to virtual organizations and networks. It is destined to further interdisciplinary study and to become a widely recognized, quality outlet for research publications in this field. eJOV draws on a wide research community studying network phenomena in various settings (e.g. industrial and commercial organizations, professionals, governments and administrations, care and health organizations, non-profit organizations) and disciplines (e.g. business administration, economics, information systems, computer science, engineering, sociology). eJOV attempts to partly overcome the fragmentation within the domain of networked virtual organizations by reaching out to various communities and by facilitating critical exchange within and across those communities. It encourages research and debate at the intersection of different disciplines. WhileeJOV pursues a methodological pluralism, it puts particular emphasis on qualitative and design-oriented research.

Online publication frees the journal of some of the length and format constraints of paper based journals. Moreover, we pursue an open access approach, in order to facilitate most generous options for the use and distribution of the published papers. The processes of organizing the journal, inviting submissions and reviewing them, coaching authors to improve their work and finally publish a paper, depend on voluntary work of the academic community. The technological platform is provided by a grant (and in future donations). This means, the journal can also address unconventional – but sound – research, without having to consider commercial interests of a publisher.

eJOV is hosted by VE-Forum, which provides a platform for discussions and interaction between readers and authors in special interest groups, project spaces, conferences, and the broader community.

2. Consultation towards FP7 - Workshop on Ambient Intelligence Technologies to Enhance the Product Lifecycle

The European Commission has the pleasure to invite you to the workshop "Ambient Intelligence Technologies to Enhance the Product Lifecycle" taking place on 27th February 2006 in Brussels. This event is a part of the ongoing consultation process carried out by the Information Society and Media Directorate-Generale in order to recognise and define the research challenges to be addressed in the upcoming 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development.

The workshop builds upon - but is not limited to - the work of projects in the cluster "Ambient Intelligence technologies for the Product Lifecycle" and will therefore cover the domain of Ambient Intelligence (AmI) technologies applied at different stages in the product lifecycle. As such, the list of discussion topics includes AmI for the product design and development, customization, intelligent production ramp-up, test, maintenance and re-cycling. Furthermore, at the workshop's core interest are emerging applications of AmI, including SCM and logistics, smart products and innovative services, and last but not least wireless sensor networks. This list is not exhaustive and everyone is encouraged to actively contribute to the discussion.

For the official announcement please visit the CORDIS website at http://www.cordis.lu/ist/ict-ent-net/ws20060227.htm

The current agenda of the day is available at http://www.ve-forum.org/default.asp?P=402&obj=S1764, where you can also join the discussion forum linked to the event. If you would like to participate please use the registration form provided on this website.
