1. SIG eProductivity |
|
Dear VE-Forum user,
eProductivity, a special interest group on ve-forum.org, is set to be the place where we want to bring together researchers in the area of information worker and knowledge worker productivity research. As part of the VE-Forum community, this special interest group cares about all aspects of measuring productivity on the level of individual, work / project group and firm / network productivity. Basically we see three reasons why it is important first to consolidate the research already done in this area and then head for a common understanding of information and knowledge worker productivity:
- As societies evolve from the industrial type of economic organizations to information societies, the research community should take care of such basic concepts as productivity is.
- Nation states want to be able to control their investments into knowledge workers. To be able to know how much and what kind of education is best for a society, we need to measure the impact of “new competencies” like network and community management on economic productivity and economic growth.
- Managers, entrepreneurs, project leaders and team leaders want to be able to control their investments into knowledge work.
In this editorial we will address the terms information / knowledge worker and productivity. Furthermore this editorial gives an overview on the different productivity measurements we have seen in academic and non-academic surveys. We invite you to be a part of any further discussion about this important topic. Subscribe to the SIG on eProductivity on www.ve-forum.org to do so. Kind regards and a successful July Pascal Sieber, Stefan Klein, and Bernhard Katzy
What we’re concerned about eProductivity is concerned about the fact that we do not have a common understanding about the impact of ICT on knowledge and information workers productivity, and we do not even have a common understanding on information and knowledge workers productivity as such. We have a common understanding on the fact that a fool with a tool is still a fool. Why should we not have a common understanding on the mechanisms of using tools, organization and personality to leverage productivity of information and knowledge workers?
Who are the Information Workers and Knowledge Workers? For getting closer to this common understanding, the nature of information and knowledge work should be described first: In 1959, when Peter Drucker looked at the emerging information age and coined the term knowledge worker, he saw the revolutionary transition from an industrial society to an office-based society. Today we are in the middle of this transition. It is estimated, that between 50 and 70% of the employees in the industrialized world are information or knowledge workers. Following the 2003 research compendium released by the Information Work Productivity Council, we distinguish between four types of information workers: Experts, Collaborators, Transactors and Integrators.
What is Productivity in the information society? Productivity is a simple term for manual labor and industrial production, which however is difficult to apply to information work: „Productivity growth comes from working smarter“, this recent notion of Eric Brynjolfsson, makes us think about productivity as a combination of personal attitudes / behavior, methods of management / organization and ICT support. This leads to four working theses: Knowledge worker productivity is...
- the result of individual learning and change of behavior (work smart)
- the result of good management practices (lead smart)
- results achieved, not time spent on production activities (measure smart)
- innovation performance, only rarely cost reduction (think smart)
What measurements are available? We see four more or less different approaches coming up from the research community and from different managerial communities. The fact that managerial communities start measuring information workers productivity without having a proven theoretical foundation shows the need for such research:
| Type 1 measurements |
e-readyness indicators |
| Type 2 measurements |
e-services as a result of knowledge work |
| Type 3 measurements |
innovation as an indicator of productivity |
| Type 4 measurements |
analogies to manufacturing productivity |
The need for research and how you can contribute There are different ways possibly helping to over come the lack of common understanding:
- On might lie in analyzing particular technologies within defined settings.
- Another approach might lie in analyzing some of the broader impacts of IT on industry structure.
- Furthermore one approach might lie in work studies and organizational behavioral studies, describing and explaining the interrelation between tasks, tools, personal attitudes / behavior of information and knowledge workers.

New Call for Papers on eProductivity We invite submissions, which further our understanding
- of information and knowledge workers’ productivity in individual and in group settings and
- of the impact of ICT on their productivity.
Two trends can be widely observed: The level of distributed and virtual organizing within and across enterprises is quickly increasing. This is particularly true for knowledge work, where most often tasks and work share can not be predefined. Experts from different parts of the world are collaborating in order to respond quickly and to achieve a level of expertise which is not available or cannot be mobilized locally. In parallel the intensity of technology use is increasing as well. Distributed teams more and more use tools like eCollaboration and real-time communication systems, including e-mail, mobile data and voice conferencing technologies.
Both trends are pursued – independently or more often in combination – based on the claim that they will increase the productivity of work. However, the productivity claim is not (yet) well supported. The discussion about the IT productivity paradox – albeit mainly focusing on the company, industry or even national level – suggests that the productivity effects are contested. One reason might be that the mainstream Marxian productivity concept of efficient combination of the production factors labor, capital and ground is less applicable to information and knowledge work. The special issue of eJOV shall contribute to further our understanding of productivity of information and knowledge work and the impact of ICT on their productivity. We already know: “a fool with a tool is still a fool”. The aim of this issue is to explore alternative understanding on the mechanisms and practices of using tools, organization as well as personality, skills, etc. for productivity of information and knowledge workers individually as well as in teams. For this special issue of eJOV, submissions are invited which address one or more of these foci of analysis:
- Technical view:
Information and knowledge workers need usable technology to be productive. The technical view includes issues like the impact of technology design or deployment on productivity.
- Individual view:
Personal behavior, personal attitudes, skills and experience combined with tools for personal information management are important factors to leverage productivity of individual knowledge workers such as a project managers, team leaders, consultants, strategists, etc. How can we explain productivity differences among knowledge workers? Does technology increase or diminish the differences? What are typical ICT usage patterns of knowledge workers?
- Team view:
Virtual teams and virtual projects develop practices of knowledge sharing and collaboration. ICT can facilitate those practices; it might require changes and can also be detrimental. We are looking for cases to illustrate or conceptual approaches to explain ways in which distributed teams and projects can work productively. Both questions: 1) what constitutes and influences information and knowledge workers’ productivity and 2) what is the impact of ICT on information and knowledge workers’ productivity are within the scope of this special issue. Research results with a multi disciplinary background are very welcome (e.g. combining management studies and IS research).
Deadline for submissions: August 30, 2006
For instructions on how to submit please check www.eJOV.org.
Call for Papers - productivity of information and knowledge workers eJOV (Journal of Organizational Virtualness) is an academic journal for theoretical and empirical research related to virtual organisations and networks. eJOV encourages research and debate at the intersection of different disciplines like business administration, economics, information systems, computer science, engineering, or sociology. While eJOV pursues a methodological pluralism, it puts particular emphasis on qualitative and constructive research.
eJOV at IAMOT 2006
Dr. Bernhard Katzy, chief editor of eJOV (www.eJOV.org), was invited to speak on a panel on “TIM Journals” at IAMOT 2006-15th International Conference on Management of Technology on 25th May in Beijing, P.R. China. The aim of the panel workshop was to provide an exchange opportunity between TIM (Technology and Innovation Management) journals and academic researchers. Dr. Bernhard Katzy introduced the vision, topics covered and the unique publish mode of eJOV.
Jeff Butler - editor of R&D Management, J. Linton – editor of Technovation, David Bennett editor of Journal of Manufacturing Technology Management, and Richard Li-Hua – editor of Journal of Technology Management in China also attended this panel workshop. More than 40 people attended the workshop.
